The ex-Empress Zita of Austria is suing a leading jewel broker in Madrid for unlawful detention of many priceless jewels estimated to be worth £1,000,000, also the famous Frankfort diadem. It is alleged that during her exile in Switzerland Baron Steiner, the late Emperor Karl’s financial adviser, contrary to instructions, pledged the jewels for £BO,OOO. Karl learned of the loss when on his deathbed. Among the missing treasures is the Hapsburg opal, worth £200,000, known as the “curaed opal,” owing to its tragic hidtoiy.
