RADIUM FUNDS
REDUCTION OF SUBSIDY SOUTHLAND BOARD’S PROTEST At yesterday’s meeting of the Southland Hospital Board, the Director-General of Health forward a copy of a letter which had been sent to the Otago Hospital Board regarding the question as to what amount of subsidy would be granted on any money raised in the district for the purchase of radium and suggesting that the whole amount collected should be handed over to the secretary of the Otago Board to obtain the subsidy payable. The Director-General further advised that in view of the demands made on the Department for a subsidy in connection with the purchase of radium, Cabinet had decided that the subsidy to be given should be at the rate of 10s in the £1 to an extent not exceeding £5OOO for any one centre. The Board decided to hold the matter over until next month’s meeting, the secretary in the meantime to make some inquiries and enter a protest against the Department’s proposal that the money collected in Southland should be handed over to the Otago Hospital Board.
