THE KAREELA ACCIDENT

FORMAL INQUEST PROCEEDINGS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, September 10. (Received September 10, at 11 p.m.) At the Coroner’s inquest on the victims of the steamer Kareela’s accident a verdict of accidental death was merely recorded in view of the fact that the Marine Court enquiry is pending. The evidence was very conflicting. According to the Captain, when he found the steering gear jammed, he gave the order full speed astern. The engineer gave evidence that the order was immediately acted on, but came too late, and the crash occurred three seconds later.

The Kareela crashed into a ferry wharf through the steering gear jamming, with the result that an elderly lady was killed outright, and several other persons were seriously injured.
