FACTORIES WORKING SHORT TIME. REVISION OF TARIFF DESIRED. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 9. At the annual meeting of the Christchurch Soft Goods Manufacturers’ Association, a discussion took place on the serious unemployment in the local industry. It was stated that there were about 500 men and women either out of work or on short time in Christchurch alone and their members would be added to if something drastic was not done in the near future. It was decided to forward the following motion to the Cabinet and the local Ministers of Parliament: ‘That this meeting of the Christchurch Softgoods Manufacturers’ Association views with great concern the heavy importation of manufactured soft goods into New Zealand which is crippling’ the local industry. There are many male and female employees out of work and the losses employers have been forced to make are heavy and continuous. It asks the Government to quickly and seriously review thoroughly the tariff question so that the local industry may regain its normal use in the community.” __________
