WIRELESS POLICY

NEW ZEALAND’S DECISION. (Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 8. In the House of Representatives Hon J. A. Hanan (Invercargill) asked the Prime Minister, without notice, what was the position in relation to the establishment of a scheme of Empire wirless. “In Australia,” said Mr Hanan, “the matter is receiving serious attention. Has any communication taken place between the British Government and the New Zealand Government and vice versa, especially with regard to the announcement that a new development has been reached in regard to wireless?” The Prime Minister replied that as far as New Zealand was concerned, the Government was waiting until the British Government had made up its mind as to what system it was going to adopt.” “There is a tremendous difference of opinion,” said Mr Massey, “as to whether what is known as ‘the Marconi system’ should be adopted or whether the British Government should go on its own. The permanent head of the New Zealand Postal Department is just now in Stockholm in connection with the International Postal Conference and the Postmaster-General has instructed him to obtain all the information possible with regard to the intentions of the British Government. In regard to Empire wireless, I discussed the matter fully with them when I was Home at the Imperial Conference. I conferred with the Postmaster-General of Britain personally and the matter was several times before the Conference.’’ “There are influences apparently at work to prevent any definite decision being arrived at,” added the Prime Minister.
