THE TORCH OF HOPE
WRECKED CREW'S PERIL. (Sun Special). CALCUTTA, June 25. The story of the wreck of the steamer Clan McMillan, in a monsoonal storm in the Bay of Bengal, shows that when the vessel went to pieces on -a reef off a small island the crew escaped in five boats. The captain’s boat was unable to keep with the others, and he and 26 members of his crew drifted through storms for two days and nights, until picked up by an olitanker. During the whole of the period, sailors had to take turns in standing on tiptoe holding a signal torch aloft, so as te cast a gleam over the high waves. Everything on board the vessel was lost.
