ACCLIMATISATION

SOUTHLAND SOCIETY. The Council of the Southland Acclimatisation Society held a special meeting last evening, when the following members were present: Mr John Gilkison (President), in the chair, Dr A. Ritchie Crawford, Messrs A. H. Stock, A. E. Tapper, C. Wilson, E. Keast, E. Croft, R. McKenzie, T. Traynor, J. M. Watson, J. Butler, R. Sloan, J. Robertson, C. F. A. Jones, T. D. Pearce, G. F. Strang, A. L. Whelham, J. E. Cuthill, E. Russell, and Captain N. McD. Weir. The Minister of Marine wrote advising that a promise had been made with regard to the tagging of Atlantic salmon, but that owing to an oversight the supply of tags was limited, and could not be carried out. The Department would, however, be pleased to accept 200 tags from the Society for the purpose. The question of fixing the boundaries between the Otago and Southland Societies was referred to a special Committee consisting of Messrs Russell and Stock for a report. The secretary of the Otago Acclimatisation Society wrote granting permission to the Southland Society’s ranger to trap up to 50 pairs of quail in the country between Roxburgh and Tarras. The Secretary for Marine advised that the right to fish for salmon was at present covered by the same license as that authorising fishing for trout. The law also provided for a five months close season, and as the Society had already had a seven months open season there was no authority in the Fisheries Act to extend the license to enable anglers to fish for salmon for an additional month in Lake Te Anau and its tributary rivers.—Received. On the recommendation of the Stock and Hatcheries Committees, it was decided to purchase a motor launch for the purpose of thoroughly prospecting what the resources are at Lake Te Anau for salmon and brown trout, and for securing supplies of ova. The President and Messrs Russell, Robertson and Cut hill were appointed a sub-committee to revise the rules of the Society with a view to their consolidation.
