HARBOUR ENGINEER
APPOINTMENT TO BLUFF BOARD. AUCKLANDER SELECTED. Out of six applications for the position of secretary, treasurer and engineer to the Bluff Harbour Board, that of Mr R. A. Adams, A.M.1.C.E., of Auckland, has been selected, the decision being made at a special meeting of the Board held yesterday, over which the chairman (Mr Andrew Bain) presided. Mr Adams, who is 36 years of age and married, was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and the Auckland University Engineering College. In 1906 he entered the Engineering Department of the Auckland Harbour Board as a cadet. Subsequently he received a varied experience in civil engineering, with special training in harbour work, and while wth the Auckland Board, was employed on the designing and constructional works carried out by the Board. In later years he was engaged by Mr J. H. Adams and the Sydney Steel company, where he gained a wide knowledge of the design and construction of structural steel work and in workshop management. In 1915 he set up in practice on his account as a civil engineer in Auckland, where he remained until 1916, when be enlisted with the Royal Naval Volunteer reserve for overseas service, in which force he held a commision as a lieutenant, subsequently being invalided out as unfit for further active service. In August, 1918, he accepted a position as Resident Engineer to the Whakatane Harbour Board, and three years later he was also appointed secretary and treasurer, relinquishing both positions at the end of last year. During his term of office at Whakatane Mr Adams carried out river training and protection work and harbour improvement work costing over £86,000. It is expected that he will be ready to assume his new duties in about two months’ time.
