AUCKLAND MOVES FOR SEPARATE UNIVERSITY. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 7. The important question of granting autonomy to the four University Colleges of New Zealand was discussed by the Council of the Auckland University College to-day. Professor Thomas said that the Professorial Board had carried the following resolution: That this Board is of the opinion that on account of the continually increasing difficulty of carrying on University work under the federated system, the time has arrived when the question of creating individual Universities in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin should be seriously considered. The Board also proposed that, a Commission be appointed for considering whether the Universities should be created, and in event of any steps being taken, to make a recommendation as to the constitution and powers, and distribution of funds now administered by the University of New Zealand. The Council resolved that the Colleges should receive autonomous powers in the matter of studies and granting of degrees and requesting the Government to appoint a Commission. The Council suggested that a prominent educationalist from outside New Zealand be invited to act as chairman of the Commission.
