MAGISTRATE’S COURT
YESTERDAY'S BUSINESS. At a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court held yesterday morning before Messrs J. Matheson and J. Ward, J.P.’s, the following cases were dealt with. James Sandri (Mr G. Reed), on a charge of theft, was remanded till Tuesday, July 8. Thomas Nilson, who was found drunk in a railway carriage, was fined £l. A young man was charged with drunkenness, obscene language, and resisting arrest. For the police, Senior Sergeant Scandrett stated that after the arrival of the late express on Saturday night,’ defendant was found lying on a carriage platform in a state of intoxication. When taken into custody he became violent, calling on the bystanders’ assistance, and it had been found necessary to handcuff him. All the way to the Police Station he had used most obscene language. For the defendant, Mr Gordon Reed said that previously, the young man had borne an excellent character. He had no recollection of what occurred, and in view of the fact that he would doubtless lose his employment should his name be published, he would ask that an order for the suppression of his name be issued. Defendant was fined £1 for drunkenness, £3 for obscene language, and £1 for resisting arrest, and an order for the suppression of his name was granted.
