NAVAL DOCK SCHEME.
AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL INTERESTING RUMOUR WOULD NEW ZEALAND JOIN IN? (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, July 7. .(Received July 7, 11.5 p.m.) Hon J. Bowen conferred with the Director of Shipbuilding and the Chairman of the Commonwealth Shipping Board in regard to the construction of one of the two new cruisers at Cockatoo Island. The conference was held in camera. MELBOURNE, July 7. As an alternative to building one cruiser at Cockatoo Island, the Governmeht is considering a proposal to build both cruisers in England, and with the money saved, to proceed with the construction of a great naval floating dock at Cockatoo, making Australia a potential base for capital ships of the British Navy in war time. It is considered likely that New Zealand would co-operate in the construction of a dock, and would also contribute a share of the cost.
