GENERAL SMUTS
REST AND REFLECTION. (Sun Special). LONDON, June 24. General Smuts, whose Government has been defeated in the South African elections, will be wise, says The Times, if he takes full advantage of his change of fortune by realising, as some other war time Prime Ministers have failed to realise, that his opportunity for rest and reflection must be taken immediately, if it is to be taken at all. Nothing has been more depressing recently, continues the paper, than the swift decline of great political reputations through futile efforts, from the very moment of defeat, to retrieve lost positions. General Smuts is still a young man politically, and a period of leisure and travel, if possible, through other countries would serve not only himself, but South Africa, far better than a rush to return to Parliamentary conflict.
