EMPIRE EXHIBITION

THE NEW ZEALAND SECTION. REPORT BY HIGH COMMISSIONER. A MIXTURE OF GOOD AND BAD. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 24. A cablegram has been received by the Government from the High Commisioner (Sir James Allen) with reference to the exhibits in the New Zealand section of the British Empire Exhibition. The High Commissioner states that the refrigerator section should have been ready in time, but for the failure of the Exhibition authorities to supply electric power. The restaurant was ready for the opening. Failure with regard to the secondary industries section was due to cases for exhibits not being ready and also, in the opinion of the manager, to the delay in the completion of the building. The present position, states the High Commissioner, is that in the refrigerator-sec-tion, the display is excellent, comparing more than favourably with the Canadian and Australian sections. The display of apples is good and also the raw wool. The fish only recently arrived. The secondary industries exhibits are poor, and with the exception possibly of the woollens display, is unworthy of New Zealand. Tie exhibits of seeds, kauri gum and minerals are very disappointing. PRAISE FROM COLONIAL SECRETARY. MR THOMAS IMPRESSED. LONDON, June 23. Mr J. H. Thomas (Colonial Secretary), after a visit to Wembley last week, wrote Mr Roberts a warm tribute to the New Zealand pavilion. He said: “The exhibit reflects the greatest possible credit on all those who worked so hard. The result of the 80 years’ development gives some idea of the possibilities of New Zealand’s future.”
