RUSSIAN CROWN GEM

DIAMOND RECOVERED FROM PAWNSHOP. A FAMOUS JEWEL. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) PARIS, June 23. (Received June 23, 8.50 p.m.) The famous blue diamond, once one of the Russian Crown Jewels, was redeemed on Saturday from the State pawnshop at Nice. The late Tsar presented the diamond in 1912 to Mademoiselle Suzanna Thillier, an authoress who frequented the Russian Court. After the revolution her chateau was confiscated and she came to France.

She lost heavily gambling at Monte Carlo and pawned the diamond, which is of 43 carate, for 200,000 francs. An American millionaire has now offered her £200,000, which will enable Mdlle. Thil tier to pay her debts.
