MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the above, held in the Council Chambers at Otautau on Friday, was attended by Councillors W. J. A. McGregor (chairman), H. Garden, T. A. Buckingham, F. J. Linscott, H. Crawford, L. Cody, W. T. James, and S. Fowle. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor F. J. Dyer. CORRESPONDENCE. H. Spear, secretary Hall Committee, Colac Bay, stated that a picture show proprietor was leaving his petrol engine in the Hall, contrary to the existing agreement. He said the proprietor had been notified that be would have to pay increased insurance, and asked whether the Council was agreeable to this being done.—Permission was granted provided the proprietor pays the extra insurance. G. C. Charlton, Tuatapere, wrote with reference to street lighting, stating that the Power Board were making the necessary arrangements for wiring up. He asked that the Council pay the cost of installation, and the business people would pay the annual charge, which would amount to three or four pounds a year.—Held over till next meeting. Dan. O’Donnell, Orepuki, asked that por- | tion of Surrey street, adjoining his property (sections 5 and 1) be re-opened.—Engin-eer authorised to have the matter attended to. The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, advised that he was having notices erected at the overbridge at Te Tua, limiting the axle load of any vehicle to 8 tons.— Received. I. D. Pearce, secretary, “Rocks” Association, reminded the Council of their promise to widen the more urgent portions of the i Rocks road. —Engineer to make necessary arrangements to carry out the work, accor- ; ding to £ for £ agreement. W. Hayward, Fairfax, wrote with reference to the cleaning of the outfall ditch, and informed the Council that he refused to do the work, as the pipes in the culvert had been broken three years ago, blocking the swamp and creek at the end of the outfall ditch.—Received. Outfall below to be gone on with. Necessary steps re the grant for this road will be made in the meantime, the bridge to ge gone on with. More and McKinnon, Riverton, asked permission to plough gorse on the roadline round More and McKinnon’s farm at Waimatuku.—Granted, subject to the usual conditions. A. H. Birss, Fairfax, stated that he was removing plant to Pukemaori by traction engine, and asked the Council’s permission to do so. He also stated that he was going to cart timber from Findlay’s property to Pukemaori railway station in two months’ time, and asked that an appointment be made with the member and Engineer in order to make arrangements for maintenance.— Use of engine granted, subject to the usual conditions, the member and Engineer to inspect Findlay’s road. t Robert Greenslade, Otautau, asked permission to plough the side of the roadline between the metal and his boundary fence to eradicate gorse.—Granted subject to the usual conditions. R. G. H. Robertson, Otautau, made application to have an outfall from his property, section 18, Strathvale Settlement. If the outfall was cleaned out, it would relieve him of the water, by a box drain connection from the Opio to the old outlet. —Member and Engineer to inspect and report. J. C. Thomson, M.P., wrote with reference to the flooding of Mrs Webb’s property at Kaka road, Alton, and stated as the road was not under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department, he requested that the Council have drains attended to as early as possible.—Member and Engineer to inspect and report. L. S. Kollatt, S. L. Racy and S. Kobay also wrote with reference to the impassable state of Kaka road.—Moved that the Power Board be requested to make good the damage done. Kilkelly Bros., Invercrgill, drew attention to the condition of part of Terrace road, Alton, and asked that immediate steps be taken to improve same. —Member and Engineer to inspect and report. C. Campbell, secretary Southland Power Board, wrote in connection with Linton Cutting and Morley bridge, and asked to be furnished with a description of the damu,;-, L. i....j on which it was done, and a copy of the report assessing the damage at £5O. —Engineer to supply the necessary report. F. J. Alley, Lumsden, wrote with reference to the bad state of the road from Castle Rock to Bridge road, and offered some suggestions as to repairs.—Member and Engineer to deal with the matter. M. Mouat, Woodlands, made application for a 60-feet ‘bridge over the Deans Burn leading to his property from the new crossing over the Waiau to Gorries. Writer would help matters by carting timber, etc. —Member and Engineer to inspect with a view to applying for a Government Grant. Geo. 0. Cassels, Town Clerk, Riverton, wrote asking the Council to appoint two members to confer with the Borough Council in making joint representations to the Government regarding an increased contribution towards the construction of tne new proposed bridge over the Jacob’s river estuary at Riverton. —Without prejudice, the Council decided to support the Riverton Borough Council in making the application for the grant. Crs. McGregor, Linscott and Crawford were appointed to meet the Borough Council and confer. The Director-General, Department of Agriculture, forwarded a circular letter dealing with foot and mouth disease of stock. —Received. Birch and Co., Tuatapere, wrote re maintenance agreement being carried out on the road leading to their mill.—To be notified that it is too late in the season to cart gravel for their contract. The secretary, Papatotara School Committee, wrote re opening and cleaning the ditch on the West side of the road fronting the school.—Member and Engineer to inspect. OTHER BUSINESS. The following motion was moved by Or. Gardner, and seconded by Cr, James: ‘That this Council approves of plan submitted and consents to the taking and closing of the roads as indicated abutting on section 1, Otahu Settlement, Block IV, Waiau Survey District, for the purpose of a new road, and that the chairman and Clerk be authorised to attach the Common Seal of the Council, and sign the document on behalf of the Council.”—Carried. Cr. Crawford moved and Cr. Buckingham seconded: “That the Clerk take the necessary steps to have ragwort and Canadian thistle deleted from the 3rd schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act.” Cr. Cody brought up the matter of rating the privately owned railway between Wairio and Nightcaps. Cr. Cody also brought up th© matter of payment for the road taken over from the Council by the Ohai Railway Board. M. Ho are and Sons, Wairio, wrote offering a small grader for sale.—Received. Accounts amounting to £2253 13/9 .vere passed for payment. Councillor Linscott moved: “That the following amounts be voted for expenditure in Waimatuku Riding: English Church to Fletcher’s road, Thombury, maintenance, £2O; Ronald and Fletcher road, maintenance, £45, total, £65. This was carried. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the County Engineer, Mr J. G. O. Baker: The bridge gang is at present engaged planting willows at Fairfax bridge protective works, and the following jobs could now be done if authorised: A new bridge over the small ereek on J. James’s road, Ermedale; renewal of a small bridge on Haywood road, Barnedale, near Ward and Kelly’s properties; and a new superstructure for the small bridge on Lower Scott’s Gap road at Patterson’s. In accordance with instructions, I have made out a list of new grants required for the ensuing year, and nave forwarded same to the Public Works Engineer at Invercargill.—

RATES. It was moved by Councillor Buckingham, and seconded by Councillor Garden: ‘That this Council intends to make on Friday, 18th day of July, 1924, for the period commencing April 1, 1924, and ending March 31, 1925, under section 120 of the Counties Act, 1920, on the capital value of all rateable properties on the Valuation Rolls of the ridings respectively, viz.—A General rate of 1 3-16 d in the £, Orepuki Riding; 1 l-16d in the £, Pourakino Riding; 15-16 d in the £, Waimatuku Riding; 1 7-16 d in the £, Aparima Riding; 15-16 d in the £, Otautau Riding; 1 7-16 d in the £, Waiau Riding; 1 7-16 d in the £, Wairaki Riding; 15-16 d in the £, Wairio Riding; 15-16 d in the £, Mararoa Riding, and under section 41 of the Hospital and Charitable Institution Act, 1909, and amendments thereto, a Charitable Aid Rate of 3-16 d in the £, c,n the capital value of all rateable properties in the County, as entered in the Valuation Rolls, payable in one sum at the office of the Wallace County Council, Otautau, on August 11, 1924.”
