COMMITTED FOR TRIAL
OLD MAN ASSAULTED. (Per United Press Association.) BLENHEIM, February 14. John O’Connor was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with assault, causing actual bodily harm to James O’Connor, aged 70. The evidence of the prosecution alleged that accused went to O'Cotfnor’s house and demanded £3. O’Connor denied owing the money and was then brutally attacked. Accused threw him to the ground, knelt on him and grasped him by the throat, threatening to kill him. Accused emphasised his threats by crushing his knees into his victim's face. O’Connor was for a time in a critical condition as the result of the assault. The Magistrate (Mr Maunsell) took a serious view of the case and remanded accused to the Supreme Court for trial, although he had elected to be dealt with summarily. The police opposed bail, which was granted in two securities of £3OO each and himself £lOO.
