ANGRY THREATS
BY THE WHEAT GROWERS FIXING THE SEASON’S PRICE THE EFFECT OF AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION. (Per United Press Association.) ASHBURTON, December 14. Addressing the Farmers’ Union, of which he is president, Mr G. Leadley (chairman of the Wheat Bord) said he was unable to announce the prices arranged with the millers till the Board reported to the Government. The position, however, was that prior to the agreement they had ascertained that the Australian parity was equivalent to 4/2 in New Zealand. - A complete embargo was impossible, because of the local shortage of 2,000,000 bushels, while Australia had a surplus of 80,000,000. Therefore, an agreement with the millers appeared necessary. He admitted the price would be utterly inadequate. Growers would be perfectly warranted in curtailing wheat areas 50 per cent. The farmers present discussed the matter with considerable anger and with threats of the total abandonment of wheat in favour of other production.
