POTATOES BLACK
HOUSEWIVES’ ACTION. LOWER PRICE WANTED. The edict has gone forth that potatoes are black in Sydney. Not black in an agricultural sense, but black in the eyes of the housewife who is called upon to pay 4Ad per pound for this item of the daily menu. The executive committee of the Housewives’ Association has called upon its members and upon all members of the general public to refrain from partaking of this nourishing vegetable until such time as the price thereof descends. A shipment of potatoes from West Australia should soon arrive there, and it is expected that the landed price will be somewhere in the region of £l5 per ton, as against the present price of about £2O per ton. The officials of the Housewives’ Association stated that recent investigation in Sus-sex-street proved that there are large stocks of potatoes in Sydney—sufficient, at all events, to supply all requirements at a reasonable price.
