MELBA AND PALMIST
DISAPPOINTMENT FORETOLD. LONDON, November 4. Cheiro, the palmist, writing in the Sunday Illustrated, recalls a visit from Dame Nellie Melba before she became famous. He predicted that Melba was on the verge of triumph, but that she would suffer 2 bitter disappointment. Melba pointed out that this prediction was contradictory, but Cheiro was unable to explain it Subsequently he witnessed one of Me|ba’s earliest operatic successes, at the conclusion of which he had supper with Melba, who was clearly disappointed at the non-arrival of one guest. She whispered to him, “You are right.” Later it was learned that a Russian protege whom Melba was helping to launch on a career had stolen £4OOO worth of her jewels, and decamped.
