RE-BUILDING JAPAN
RECONSTRUCTION ESTIMATES AGREED UPON. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Reuter’s Telegram). TOKIO, November 19. Agreement on the reconstruction estimates has been reached by the Reconstruction Budget Committee, in consultation with the Finance Department. The agreement, which is now being submitted to the Reconstruction Advisory Council, provides for a total expenditure for Tokio and Yokohama of 705,000,000 yen (£36,000,000) over the first period of six years. It is understood that the work of reconstructing the cities will be spread over several periods to avoid as far as possible the necessity for a foreign loan. The Estimates cover the cost of the roads, canals and parks, also subsidies for assisting the industries in re-building public building with interest on long term municipal loans to both cities. It is stated that the second term expenditure will cover the aerial defence of the capital and also underground railways.
