WELLINGTON WOOL SALE

SPIRITED COMPETITION PRICES SHOW AN ADVANCE “FAR BEYOND EXPECTATIONS.” (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 20. The first Wellington wool sale of the season took place to-day when there was hardly room on the benches to accommodate the throng of keen buyers assembled, those present representing all the buying countries, Bradford, Germany and the Continent all buying strongly. The sale opened in a manner far beyond the expectations of even the most optimistic. There was some old wool and some bright, light conditioned lots of early shorn clips, the supplies coming mainly from Wairarapa, Manawatu, Marlborough and Nelson. Doubt was expressed before the sale as to whether America was in the market, but the doubt disappeared as soon as the sale opened, for she was out for the best wool. Germany was offering freely for crossbreds. France and Italy sought pieces. A feature of the sale was the competition for bellies and pieces, which, in some instances, were pushed up almost to the level of fleece wool. Not much Merino was offering. Buyers seemed reluctant to pay last year’s prices. Half-breds were in strong demand on a par with last season. Altogether the sale was an outstanding one, eminently satisfactory to the growers. Generally the rise on crossbreds was Ijd to 2d over last May prices; on bellies and pieces it was considerably higher, in some cases up to 3d. Hogget wool was sought keenly from all quarters and showed a rise greater than that of ordinary fleece wool. Lambs’ wool ■was looked for by France particularly, Bradford and local mills, fetching May figures. RANGE OF PRICES.
