THE COUNTRY TRADH

To the Editor. Sir, —We note your remarks in your leader this morning to the effect that the loss to Invercargill through the Saturday half-holiday B not being fairly investigated, which seems very much the case. The business people of Invercargill seem very hazy on the question. One makes an estimate of £3OOO a month, then Mr W. W. Millar makes the staggering jump to £9OOO per week (perhaps he really meant £9OOO per day) the difference between the two estimates being £33,000 per month. According to Mr W. W. Millar about 3000 country people must have come in on Saturday and spent £3 per head or 1000 at £9 per head. Absurd on the face of it! If Mr W. W. Millar has not been selling so many pies etc., as in former days, he must open hia eyes wider and look for other reasons nearer the mark than the lom of the trade of a few country people on Saturday. I It is flattering to the country people to I think that they are valued at £460,000 per annum. They are of some use after al! other than to spend an occasional weekend in the country with. The it.nl, true facts of the case an ai you mention in your leader, the depression in trade and low prices of produce during the last two years. The country people have not so much money to spend as formcily and those who are wealthy dj not save when you have your half-holiday, as they go to town in their cars and can pay some one to take chargn of (heir children. Let us hope the town gets its £460,000 back in the future, if it ever lobt it! Personally I don’t think it did anything like it. I am, etc., COUNTRY BUMPKIN.
