WOOL SALE

NAPIER PRICES DOWN. (Per United Press Association.) NAPIER. February 19. The third Napier wool sale of the season, which opened on Saturday night, concluded to-day, when 27,500 bales were offered to a bench of 50 buyers, representative of most sections of the trade. From the outset it became evident that competition would not be so keen as at the January sale, and with wool generally speaking not in so good a condition as disposed of early in the season, prices suffered to a certain extent. The general reduction was from Id to lid per lb, which brought the prices back to ' those ruling at the December sales. The noticeable feature of the sale was the lack of American competition, and this undoubtedly had its effect on the keenness of the sale and also on the prices realised. Bradford was the mainstay of the sale, as the general bulk of the Hawke’s Bay wool is suitable for this market. Prices for Bradford wooLs were also easier by a penny. France was very keen after lambs’ wool, whilst Belgium and Germany had a fair sprinkling of orders. The local mills were not active to any extent, but scourers helper! materially to keep the values of pieces and bellies up. These were probably the best selling proposition of the day. About 50 per cent, of the catalogues sold under the hammer, but a large amount of the passed-in lots sold subsequently. Southdown 22d to23:]d
