Following the decision of the High Court that bonus shares in companies shall be exempt from income tax, refunds have to be made of taxes previously levied on such shares. A large amount is involved. SYDNEY, October 6. Sir George Fuller, the Premier, has received a request, from a deputation of .Assembly members of both parties, that the salaries of country members be increased from £6OO to £875. The deputation pointed out that more than half the Assembly was favourable. Sir George Fuller replied that if the Bill was passed he would instruct the Treasurer not to sign the cheque. The chairman of the voluntary wheat pool announced that last season’s pool would be cleared up by the end of the year, when a further payment of eightpence per bushel would be made to farmers, making the total amount by the pool over £5,500,000. BRISBANE, October 6. Sleeman and Connolly have lodged appeals against their sentence in the recent bribery case.
