FOREST FIRES IN CANADA
LOSS OF LIFE IN NORTHERN ONTARIO. FIVE TOWNS DESTROYED. (By Telesraph.— Press Assn.—Copyright) (Australian and N2. Cable Association.) OTTAWA, October 5. According to a message from North Bay, Ontario, 30 lives were lost through a forest fere, which is sweping Northern Ontario. Five towns have been destroyed, >ad thousands of people are homeless. A TERRIBLE CATASTROPHE HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE FIVE THOUSAND HOMELESS NEW YORK. October 5. (Received October 6, 825 pun.) The railways from North Bay are burdened with thousands of refugees from the burning areas in Haileyburg. Fifty to a hundred people were drowned when they were pushed off the dock while attempting to board a rescue boat. Several people were trampled to death and scores were injured when the flames swept the Catholic church, causing a panic. The whole countryside is reported to be covered with dense smoke. Electric lights were turned on at noon in Montreal. According to the latest reports more than 5000 are homeless. RAIN FALLING. NEW YORK. October 6. (Received October 7, 12.20 a.m.) Ram is falling at North Bay to-night and it is believed that further danger of fires is practically ended.
