THE COAL INDUSTRY DEMAND FOR MINIMUM WAGE (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, October 5. (Received October 6, 7.30 p.m.) The National Board for the coal industry ■e: and discussed the workers’ proposals for improving the economic position of the industry, including a minimum rate of wages in order to provide an average minimum wage exceeding the July, 1914, wage by a percentage equal to the rise in the cost of living according to the ministry of Labour’s figures. The owners replied that it was quite impossible to consider any increase. Indeed, it might be necessary shortly to consider a reduction of the present wages agreement. The workers replied that they could not leave the matter there. They must approach the Government with a view to •ecuring a minimum wage.
