RAND REBELLION

A DEATH SENTENCE CONFIRMED PUBLIC OUTCRY (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable .Association). CAPETOWN, October 4. The confirmation of the death sentence passed on Stasson, a miner who was convicted of shooting two natives during the recent Rand trouble, hs* caused great feeling in Labour and Nationalist circles, and protests and appeals for a reprieve are showering upon the Government from all quarters. A mass meeting Of workers in Capetown City Hall addressed by Mr Tom Mann, adopted a resolution demanding Stasson’s immediate reprieve. The execution is fixed for to-morrow. Referring to resolutions passed by Labour organisations in all parts of the world condemning the Rand death sentence as judicial murders, the Cape Times maintains that the facts in the Stasson case revealed a wanton disregard of native life. “In so grave a matter,” says the Times, “no Government can allow itself to be swayed by sentiment. The Government’s decision ought to be accepted, as it was reached dispassionately and in accordance with the law, and in the highest interests of the country.”
