SPORTS AWAKE

In these worrying and strenuous days, it is certainly desirable that wholesome outdoor sport and amusement be encouraged. However, there seems to be a section of the public who wish to curtail the innocent pleasures of the people as a whole. Their efforts are apparently often successful, a prominent instance being afforded by the banishment of bookmakers. However, the populace—which is always slow to move, but which takes a considerable amount of stopping once it has started —is at last realising that things are not jus < they should be. : etition to have the Gaming Law revi. so that bookmakers be allowed to operate on racecourses again, is being circulated in all parts of the Dominiqji, and is meeting with very gratifying support. This petition points out the great advantages of licensing bookmakers, chief among which are the facilities offered to poorer people to enjoy the “sport of kings,” and the new fields of revenue opened to the Government. Only by united effort can success in routing the “kill-joys” be achieved, and all sports are therefore asked to append their signatures to the petition, which can be seen and signed almost anywhere—act now. When petitions are filled up they should be promptly returned to Box 1011, Wellington.—(Advt.)
