TRAMWAY RETURNS

ANOTHER DECREASE The tramways returns presented at last night’s Council meeting for April show another drop as compared with the corresponding month of last year. The revenue (£2116 6/3) was £2l 16/6 less than the sum collected in April of last year and 35,704 fewer passengers were carried, while 1093 more miles were run. The receipts per car mile were 17.35 d as against 19.07. The Traffic Manager submits the following eomment on the position : During April of last year the Wednesday half-holiday was being observed. I have therefore taken the receipts for Wednesday and Saturday of Istst year, and those of Friday and Saturday of this year. The latter shows a decrease of £92 1/11. Owing to the Easter holidays being in the month of April as against May of last year, I have taken the receipts for Good Friday and Easter Monday and those for the corresponding dates of last year. The two days for Easter of this year show a decrease of £4O 17/1. Anzac Day was strictly observed as Sunday, which was responsible for a decrease of £37 7/8. The several items outlined have been accounted for £l7O 6/8, leaving an amount of £3l 9/8 less the actual figures of the decrease, which amount must be attributed to the tightness of money and people not coming into town as they were some months ago. This, coupled with the increased number of passengers who are availing themselves of the concession fares, shows to a great extent, the cause of the decrease in .jrevaiue for the montii of AjuiL
