MANAPOURI-TE ANAU MILFORD SERVICE.

To the Editor. Sir.—Your “local” which credits me with saying that “both the Government and Mr Murrell are favourable to a large boat being placed on Manapouri; he did not think it would be many years, perhaps only one, until the steamer would run from Murrell’s track at Manapouri to the sounds,” would make an excellent par for “Shaun’s Patch” and it seems 'too bad to anticipate him. Now such a steamer must be a water plane at least as it must negotiate a dozen miles of West Coast mountains. But let that pass; who can say that such may not yet eventuate even though I did not so phophesy But what I did say was that both Mr Govan (at the Milford end, and Mr Murrell (at the Deep Cove end) are favourably disposed to placing a larger boat on the sound! .When this is done it will be possible to connect Murrell’s track from Lake Manapouri (which ends at Deep Cove) with Milford Sound and the Te Anau track making a round trip. From Manapouri to Milford by land and lake is some 80 miles, add to this about 100 miles by sea with all the glories of the Sounds open to the sightseer and you have a tour of surpassing variety and grandeur no part of which would be covered twice, a tour of over 200 miles and new scenes all the way. Something to look forward to. I am, etc. HENRY FOWLER. Kennington, 13/5/22.
