IMMODEST FASHIONS
NEW POPE’S CRUSADE APPEAL TO ITALIAN SOCIETY INSTRUCTIONS TO CATHOLIC BISHOPS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (United Service.) LONDON, March 28. (Received March 29, 5.5 p.m.) The Daily Mail’s Rome correspondent states that according to a report from the Vatican the Pope ordered instructions to be prepared regarding the present immodest of fashions for transmission to all catholic bishops. The present Pope is the first specifically taking exception to women’s dress. Former pontiffs have several times exhorted women to return to more modest ways. Pius XI began the campaign during the reception of the Roman aristocracy, when he invited the women of the nobility to join in a crusade against certain of the present fashions which he described as scandalous and indecorous. He feeis strongly on the point because he has the highest opinion of women and is a strong believer in their value as a powerful factor in the struggle of humanity to reach a higher plane.
