GERMAN SHIPPING
MERCANTILE MARINE INADEQUATE RECONSTRUCTION HINDERED BY COST (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) BERLIN, March 28. At the shipping conference, Herr Stimjning, general manager of the Norddeutscber Lloyd Company, said the Government’s grant of twelve milliard marks for the reconstruction of the mercantile marine had proved quite inadequate, especially as the cost, of shipbuilding in steel had risen from 2000 marks a ton to 8200. The price of finished vessels had advanced three to four fold. Nevertheless Germany had already built or bought abroad 280 x essels, aggregating 1,500,000 tons, and ►’3o, aggregating 1,250,000 tons, were under construction, which was still much hampered by the coal shortage. They needed 100,000 tons a month, but were allotted officially 30,000 only a fraction of which Hrae actually delivered.
