ACTION AGAINST UNION
SHIP'S STEWARD’S CASE. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 20. At the Magistrate’s Court, Patrick L. Doherty took action against the Federated Cooks’ and Stewards’ Union of New Zealand to recover £96 18/-. Plaintiff alleged that when about to be engaged as a steward on the Tahiti. E. Kennedy, the union secretary. intimated to the Union Company that plaintiff should not be employed. Plaintiff contended that this action was illegal and Unjustifiable. He had been fined 5/- for not attending a union meeting, and in consequence of his refusing to pay the fine he had been prevented from signing on the Tahiti.
For the defence it was stated that there was no question of malice. It was essential that members should make themselves financial. Doherty had not done so, whereas the other members of the crew had. The of the fine was not involved. Decision was reserved.
