HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE.

WELLINGTON, September 21. The High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, September 19, is as follows: — Meat.—There is a small supply of English meat, and prices are firmer, but the trade is dull. The average price of beef is 1/5, mutton 1/11*, lamb 2/os. Imported meat, no change in price, demand moderate. Butter.—The average price for English is £22. There is a small supply of Irish, but the demand is limited owing to the advance in price. Present quotations are £22 5/- to £22 15/-. It is understood that the Food Minister has arranged for a renewal of the Danish contract at £ls per cwt quotation, c.i.f. The purchase was made with the co-opera-tion of the Belgian and German Governments in order to keep prices to consumers as low as possible. Cheese.—The trade is very quiet. English is moving at £8 16/- to £9 6/-. The demand for Canadian is moderate. White, £8 to £8 2/-; coloured, £8 2/- to £8 6/-. Spot quotation, c.i.f., irregular, £8 3/- to £8 4/-.
Hemp.—The Manila market is quiet and steady and the price firm. J grade, OctobcrDecember shipment, sold at £6B 10/-, at which figure shipment June-July or August to October, November, or December, is now quoted. The New Zealand market is steady, but without animation. Spot quotations are slightly higher. High points, seller, £56; fair, £54; shipment AugustSeptember, or October, £54 and £sl respectively. The honey market is firm, but quiet, for best quality, the demand being chiefly for cheaper sorts. New Zealand first grade sold this week at £5 per cwt. Second grade quoted at nominally 90/- per cwt.
