WALLACETOWN SALE.

-■ A FALLING MARKET.

The weekly sale was held in the Waliacetown saleyards yesterday, when the market throughout had a tendency to fall. The yaiding was a good one numerically, but the sale dragged and business was hard to effect.

FAT CATTLE. —The sale opened on some good quality stock, and it was evident that the market was easier than the previous sale. The prices showed a considerable drop, and the opinion expressed by many buyers was that the price per hundred pounds was under £3 for the first time for months. The top price obtained for fats was £25 for a prime heifer sold by the Southland Farmers’ Co.-op. on account of J. Shield, Tokonui, and purchased by W. Turpin. Prices for prime mediums ranged from £l9 to £23 17/6, good mediums £l6 5/- to £lB 7/6, light and unfinished £l2 10/- to £ls 15/-. There was a good yarding of cow and heifer beef, but the enquiry was only for prime sorts, and unless the beef offered showed good finishing little business was done. Prime heifers from £l7 to £25, light and unfinished £lO 17/6 to £l4 17/6. STORE CATTLE.—Practically the whole yarding was passed in, vendors being unwilling to face the market. There was a big yarding of dairy cows, but few were sold. A few purebred Friesians sold at good rates and brought keen competition. FAT SHEEP. —A further drop of about 3/- per head was noticeable in the fat sheep, and the first six pens were passed in. The market did not recover, and prices at the close were no better than those offering for the opening pens. Prices offered at auction were as follow; Prime wethers 44/- to 47/6, medium wethers 38/3 to S9/S. Only two pens of fat ewes were sold, the prices being 33/4 and 32/-.

STORE SHEEP. —The yarding was a small one, and in sympathy with the rest of the sale prices showed ifc, slightly easier tendency. The following table shows the entry for the last three sales: —

DUNEDIN, September 21. Sales on ’Change—Westport Coal, 30/-; New Zealand Refrigerator, con., 24/-; Papuan Products, 2/-. CANTERBURY MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, September 21. The oat market is practically unchanged. Occasional lines have passed on the basis of 4/3, f.0.b., s.i. Farmers’ offerings are practically nil, and apparently there is little oats in growers’ hands. Although there is no subsidence in values on the week, and the tone of the market is one of depression, it is understood that the possibility of export to Britain has been discussed, but what the prospects are is not known. A few small parcels of wheat are coming in from farmers who missed their sowing. Grass-seed lines are showing activity, a fair amount of business having occurred between merchants, particularly in white clover. Ryegrass and cocksfoot are aUo causing inquiry.
