QUEENSLAND DISCOVERY,

. f e P°rted discovery of a petroleum oilfield in Queensland is arousing much in',An duplication has been made by Mr .-uthur Merry, of the Department of Agriculture, for a prospecting license covering about 2000 acres on the main Hue in the vicinity of Goodna, including an area set aside some years ago by the Denham Government for State abattoirs. Mr Morry’s application will come before the warden shortly, and some difficulty is hliely to arise, as the abattoirs reserve is vested in trustees, and is not strictly speaking Crown land.

Mr Morry, who is a recognised geological export, interviewed, said ;—“I am convinced from tlw geological formation of the country that jwtroleum in large quantities will be found in this locality. I believe petroleum deposits will be found to exist over an area of probably 5000 square miles in the immediate vicinity of the capital.” He drew graphic picture of Brisbane becoming at no distant date Australia’s great shipping distributing centre for oil cargoes He added that while on a recent visit to Beaudesert he inspected wells and bores the surface of which were covered with a thick, treacly substance, which he feds assured indicates the presence of mineral oil.
