INQUEST

THE TUSSOCK CREEK FATALITY'

On Tuesday at Winton the Coroner, Mr G. Cruickshank, S.M., held an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Rolf Stefanson Mosan, farmer, who died at Tussock Creek on August 18. The deceased, who was 85 years of age, was a native of Norway and a bachelor with no relatives in New Zealand.

Henry Cox, farmer, Tussock Creek, said that at about 5 p.m. on August 18 Edward Hibbs informed him that there was someone lying on the road. Witness proceeded to the spot and found the deceased lying face downwards on the gravelled road at Wilson’s Crossing road. He was dead when witness reached there and it was later found that his neck had been broken, while his face was considerably bruised and bleeding. His horse, properly saddled, was quietly grazing close by. There were marks on the road and also a dirt mark on the horse’s nose, which would suggest that the horse had stumbled and thrown the deceased head first on to the gravel. A few minutes before 5 p.m. the deceased called at witness’s house for his mail. Mosan was about eighty-five years of age. | Duncan Mclntyre said that he had known Mosan well and had worked with him on his farm at Tussock Creek. He knew that | the deceased was subject to fits and on one occasion he saw him fall off a horse in a fit. He was inclined to think that this was what happened on August 18. Further local evidence has still to be heard.
