ENTERTAINMENTS

A GAMBLER’S SOUL. . The Albion theatre was well filled for the initial screenings of big Bill Hart’s best characterisation to date in “A Gambler’s Soul.” A coterie of the best and most beauteous of lady screen stars support him, including Sylvia Bremer, Mildred Harris (now Mrs Charlie Chaplin) and beautiful Alma Reubens. The story is the strangest and strongest of the William S. Hart series, and this sterling actor has never given better artistic work. He plays the part of “Level Leigh,” a fashionable gambler, with a passionate love for his little sister, who is sickly and forced to live in the mountain air for her health. Through treachery big Bill Hart is suspected and gaoled for the murder of a stage-coach driver. He succeeds in escaping and after many exciting scenes establishes his innocence and all ends happily. The picture is supported by a number of other films, including a splendid comedy “His Day of Doom,” a beautiful scenic, St. Albans, and the Pathe Gazette. Seats may be booked for tonight’s performance rt the theatre. The first session starts at 7.15 p.m. and the second at 8.50 p.m.

POPULAR PICTURE PALACE. Enthushism "ran high on Saturday when packed audiences witnessed the premiere of the “Jewel” productions “Borrowed Clothes.” The greatest point of interest was no doubt the appearance of Mrs Charlie Chaplin (Mildred Harris) in the leading role. A charming personality, coupled with undoubted dramatic gifts, is sure to make the beautiful star a permanent favourite with local audiences. The play is powerful in conception and has been produced on a lavish scale, many of the scenes being perfectly gorgeous in their splendour. There are excellent supports, and the programme should attract further large audiences for the two remaining nights of the season.
