A veiy cold breeze prevailed in the early part of the day, but the sun shpne out in still atmosphere towards the evening. The track was in good order.

Sport made the running tip the back to the far turn in the Hunters’ Plate, but Gaylight (McDonald) was in front turning into the straight. Sonny, by Terrapin—Patch (S. Barr), challenged the leader at the distance and beat him home by half a length. Sport was seventy yards away third. An objection against Sonny on the ground that he was not eligible was dismissed.

At the first obstacle in the Aylesbury Steeplechase The Grand came to grief. Graftella jumped to the front, but Lawsuit (L. Hagerty) was soon making the pace and jumping in improved style at each fence. Through the straight and along the back Graftella gained on Lawsuit, the latter was always drawing away on the flat, with San Sebastian in tiSlrd place. Traditor (McChesney) was some distance away. At the Kennel’s double San Sebastian took second pjace, but Graftella and Lawsuit were on even terms with him. At the second last obstacle. San Sebastian, by San Francisco—Brave Heart (T. Humphries) was first to land over the last fence, beating Lawsuit home after a g«sod race by three lengths. Graftella (Fielding) was five lengths away and Traditor next?

Kilkee was last to move in the Heatheote Handicap, Rebekah (J. Olsen) and lionskin (H. Young) taking command from Hisingham and Gold Kip in that order; The field closed up in the straight, AU Over showing out with Risingham and Gold Kip, while Borodino was noticeable on the outside. A slashing finish resulted in Gold Kip, by St. Ams—Fraulein (R. Tapp), beating Risingham (A. Reid) by a nose with All Over ’(Morris) a nose off third. Potentiality was placed fourth a length off, but Borodina appeared to occupy that position. Battle Array ran well to th? distance. Gazique faded a hundred yards from home.

The Styx Hurdles produced a fine race and a close finish. Red Cent (G. Fielding) and Tip Up made the running from a bunched field, Master Motoua bringing up the rear. The order was the same up the back with Reformation in third place. At the far turn Red Cent' dropped back as also did Wild Pilgrim, who made a faulty jump. Tip Up and Reformation were in command to the last fence, with Wild Pil-

grim and Master Moutoa next. At the last fence Reformation made a faulty jump . and Tip Up, by All Red—Fairy Ross (L. Hagerty) and Wild Pilgrim (J. McChesney) drew out to fight out the issue all down the running, the former winning by a head. Master Moutoa (Lorigan) was two lengths away third. Then came Red Cent, Tigerland and Reformation. McChesney rode a fine race on the Southland horse, saving ground cleverly over the last half mile, following on a bad jump at the third last fence.

Wagering took a wide range in the Sydenham Hurdles, all the starters being well supported. Signature and Art (Roach) • were first to show out, but Jeannot was leading both passing the stand, where Paraoa (Ellis) fell, no damage resulting. Running to the back Signature was just leading Jeannot, with Sir Solo and Art next. Then there was a big gap to Oinahu. Omahu moved up at the far turn. Art looked dangerous at the second last fence, but tired near the home turn. Sir Solo, by Sir Laddo —Wepener (L. Hagerty) was first to land on the flat from Signature (S. Henderson) and .going on won by three lengths from Signature, drawing away four lengths from Omahu at the finish. Then came Art, / Jeannot and Sleight of Hand.

The Lincoln Steeplechase produced a chapter of accidents in .place of a contest. Polthogne tailed off early and Master Lupin soon followed suit. Gang ’Awa had tired to nothing when the stand double was reached and Merry Lad by Merriwee—Zaida (L. Hagerty) went away by himself. Master Lupin was pulled up, having broken a hind leg, necessitating his destruction. Then Gang 'Awa fell at. the sod wall turning a

somesault and Merry Lad cantered past the judge an easy winner, while Poithogue (F. Ellis) was leaping the last fence. Having ridden three jumping winner;', in succession, Hagerty was treated to a great reception.

The first to show ,'ut in the Redcliffs Handicap was Strayshot, but lama-a-roa (Goldfinch) was soon in front. The latter led into the straight, but was soon challenged by Imaribbon, Black Mountain, Glenshine and Pretty Bobby. In the run hoYne Imaribbon, by Gay Spark—Grey Ribbon (R. Tapp), drew out to win by over a length, Tama-a-roa just beating Black Mountain (R. Reed) for second place. Glenshine (Tilson) was a head away fourth.

When the field reached the straight in the Selwyn Handicap, Form Up, by Formative (S. Reid) was in charge and eventually won comfortably from Redshire (G. Young), with Borodino just heading a bunch, of whom Post Haste was prominent. Redshire ran a good race, but had no chance with the winner. FOOTBALL BAD WEATHER PREVENTS CLUB MATCHES. LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL BEATS GORE. Heavy rain which fell early on Saturday was responsible for the postponement of all club matches with the exception of one which was played on the Eastern Reserve between Woodlands and Bluff juniors. The Woodlands players had come to town before it was known that the day’s matches were put off anti when the Bluff boys became aware of this thfty agreed to come to town and fulfil the fixture. The Gore High School XV too had motored down with the object of playing their annual match with the local High "School team, so this was gone on with though only a moderate' number of spectators attended at Rugby Park on the No. 2 area of which the game was played. After a hard game in the most unfavourable climatic conditions the Southland boys Gore by 16 to nil. The visitors were unfortunate in not scoring on one or two occasions when they nearly drew blood. This annual fixture has always resulted in victory for the local school and Saturday’s score was comparatively small when it is recalled that the G.HB. has been defeated with over half a century scored against them by the wearers of red, white and blue.

SOUTHLAND HIGH SCHOOL (16 v, CURE HIGH SCHOOL (nil.)

Right from the kick-off the local lads attacked and before play had progressed five minutes Sligo crossed the line in a forward rush and scored, McKenzie converting. [Southland H.S. 5; Gore H.S. nil. A passing rush by Southland backs starting from a scrum on Gore’s 25 met with weak defence and Diack got over, the kick failing. Southland 8; Gore nil. The visitors thenceforward brightened up and were soon attacking hard at the other end. Here Peterson (Gore) took a particularly neat mark and it was disallowed, but a similar catch soon after gave Gore a shot at goal, which failed. Much open forward work was used as the ball was too wet to be handled effectively by backs and play wavered, going from end to end of the field, though the local team with a big weight advantage had the beat of the play. The score stood at B—o when the first spell closed. The second spell found the Goreites on the attack, but in spite of good individual work by McGregor, Paterson, Richards and Johnstone they did not manage to alter the score. This spell was played with Gore facing the S.E. wind and much rain fell, but the balance of advantage was more equal than in the first spell. In a very loose open attack by Southland, Robertson picked up from the ground and put in a fine charge, eluding a couple of Gore defenders. He was well tackled just as he crossed the line but managed to touch down. McKenzie neatly kicked a goal. Southland 13, Gore nil. Several upheld charges were made by Gore, one led by MsGregor being particularly meritorious, but it came to grief by Kingsland tripping him from behind while dribbling-to what might have been a fine runaway score. In the last few minutes a scrum just close to the Gore posts provided a neat little mark for Sligo who fielded the 1 almost impossible ball as it flew out from the ruck. McKenzie took the kick and goaled well. Then the game closed. Southland High School 16 (2 converted tries, 1 unconverted try and a goal from a mark). Gore High High School nil.

Mr S. Foster was referee, jfrNIOR.

WOODLANDS (5) V. BLUFF (3).

The Woodlands v. Bluff junior match was the only competition game played on Saturday, and after a hard game Woodlands won on the call of time by 5 points (a converted try) to 3 points (an unconverted try). Mr D. Stewart was referee.

AUCKLAND v. THAMES,

(Per United Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, August 17.

The Auckland Rugby representatives defeated Thames by 20 points to 11. The result was in doubt right up to the closing stages and the visiting team played a fine game. At half time the score was Auckland 11; Thames 8.

SEDDON SHIELD MATCH,

BULLER v. NELSON

WESTPORT, August 16

The first match for the Seddon Shield since pre-war days took place at Westport to-day, when the Nelson and Buffer Rugby Unions’ representative teams played a drawn match, each side scoring a try. For Buffer P. Ryan was the try getter and for Nelson Bennett scored. The game was very strenuous, but the ground was greasy from a 1 heavy overnight rain. Buffer retains the Shield. „
