GRADE STOCK

RESTRICTIONS FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS PROPOSED. The advisability of only allowing registered stock to compete in the championship classes was yesterday discussed by the directors of the Southland A. and P. Association. The secretary (Mr D. Cuthbertson) read an article on allowing grade stock to compete in championships from the Southland Times, and the president (Mr A. S. Holms) said that the first cross was often better than the purebred in appearance, but was of no value as a sire. In his opinion the time had arrived when the Association should limit the championship classes to registered purebrcds only, and so encourage breeders to register their stock. A member: I think that breeders should have at least two years’ notice before this is introduced. Mr A. Campbell: It is a step in the right direction. All stock associations had communicated with breeders two years ago, he went on, asking them to register their purebred stock, and if breeders had not complied with that request they had only themselves to blame. The following committee was appointed to revise the schedule: Messrs A. Campbell, N. Roxburgh and A. Gerrard.
