TRAINS FOR CHILDREN

EDUCATION BOARD’S REQUEST. At yesterday’s meeting of the Education Board, Mr' P. de la Perrelle who, with Mr j. imdlay, was deputed some time ago to wait on the District Traffic Manager with a request that the afternoon country trains should be run at times more suited to the interests of children attending town schools, delivered his report. He stated that a promise had been made that the matter would be enquired into, but so far nothing had been heard although the request had been lodged over two months ago. Children having their homes in the Orepuki, Riverton and Winton districts had to leave by the 2.50 p.m. train and were deprived of half-a-day’s tuition as they were also late in arriving in the morning. He thought that the interests of the children were of greater importance than were the interests of a few country people who might wish to get home early.—(Hear hear.) Mr Findlay spoke in a similar’vein. Now that so 1 many men were back, he said, there was no reason why the timetable should not be altered. Mr Perrelle having moved that the Railway Department be approached in regard to the matter, the motion was seconded by Mr Findlay and unanimously carried.
