Received August 9, 10.20 p.m. The Daily Chronicle states that it is true Germany has agreed to the arrangement regarding hospital ships, but there has been no formal agreement with the Entente, who were not actively concerned in the negotiations. King Alfonso originated the negotiations, which were confined to Madrid and Berlin. If the agreement is made effective the Allies will welcome it, but it is important to remember that the Allies did not initiate the arrangements. Their attitude remains unaltered, consisting of an absolute denial of the alleged misuse of hospital ships. HOUSING THE WORKING CLASSES. SHORTAGE OF HALF A MILLION HOUSES. The Local Government Board admits there is a shortage of half a million houses, while other authorities claim that the shortage is a million, involving an outlay of £200,000,000. The housing shortage is admittedly closely connected with the industrial unrest. The Government Commissioner at Glasgow states that Glasgow, Resyth and Dundee report that there is an immediate need for houses for 100,000 workers. The Barrow in Furness Commissioners state that hundreds of beds are occupied day and night. MUNITIONS EXPLOSION. 48 KILLED AT CRACOW. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn. & Reuter.) ZURICH, August 9. Received August 10, 12.5 a.m. In an explosion in a munition works near Cracow 48 artillerymen were killed, and many were injured.

GERMAN PEACE DEMONSTRATION. MASS MEETING OF MINERS. AMSTERDAM, August 9. Received August 10, 12.5 a.m. A mass meeting of 8000 miners at Essen, called to discuss food and wages, developed into a demonstration in favour of peace, and passed a resolution demanding that the Reichstag vigorously push a resolution to this effect.
