9461 ii Pay o< the War
An important debate on the direction of the war has taken, place in the House of Commons, Mr Winston Churchill commenting on the Salonika expedition, and the failure of the Government to use all the man-power at its disposal, regardless of race or colour. He considers that if we cannot win the war with the forces at our disposal this year, the big effort should not be made till 1918, the intervening time being spent in organising all the resources of all the Allies, so that when we do strike there W’ill be no doubt about our'ability to continue to absolute and final success. The British are consolidating their gains on the Somme front and the second phase of the advance is about to begin. The Americans, by a public demonstration, have shown strong resentment at the action of a small minority in tying President Wilson’s bands. The people are apparently ready for active Intervention. The Canadian and New Zealand Ministers will attend a meeting of the War Cabinet to-day. ,
