CALEDONIAN GYMKHANA.

To the Editor. Sir, —My attention has been directed to a letter appearing in your valued paper over the signature of “Disgusted,” criticising part of the programme devoted to bagpipe music. As the item referred to is a competition for boys under 15 years of age, I would like to point out that the prize for this event was specially donated last year and again this year by an enthusiastic Caledonian, consequently the directors had no option but to place the item on the programme. Special prizes are coming in freely for different events, and a great demand for programmes has commenced, indicating the most attractive patriotic gathering ever held in Southland. I would suggest to “Disgusted” that if he considers pipers of a certain age should be specially catered for, it will give me very great pleasure to place the event on our lengthy programme, providing “Disgusted” will kindly donate a prize for the event. If be does this, I will give another prize myself for the same event. Here is an opportunity for “Disgusted” to display his patriotic spirit. As the programmes are now in the printer’s hands, an early reply is necessary.—l am, etc., THOMAS CRAWLEY. President Caledonian Patriotic Committee. 25th Jan., 1917.
