France, and was born a.t Chatton, near Gore. He was educated at the Benio and Gore High Schools, and was a farmer by occupation. He was attached to the K Company of the 11th Reinforcements. He was formerly a Sergeant in the D Squadron of the 12th Otago Mounted Rifles, and always took a keen interest in military matters. corpokax. r. w. x. wnawa. Corporal F. W. R. WUlcox, wounded in the foot and leg on July 3, is a son of Mr W. A. E. and Mrs Elisabeth Willcox, formerly of Invercargill, and now of Tauranga, where Mr WUlcox is postmaster. Corporal WUlcox, who was attached to the 16 til Waikato Company Auckland Infantry of the sth Reinforcements, wan born in Invercargill, and educated at the - Park School and the Invercargill Boys’ High School. He left New Zealand as orderly sergeant in charge of the records of the 6th Reinforcements. Utipon his arrival in Egypt ho wont to the front as a private, anil was at Sari Bair and Chunuk Bair on August 15. At one time Corporal Willcox was a member of the Union S.S. Co.'s Invercargill staff, and later served as a purser. For a time also he was employed in Messrs Roopc and Co.’s Office. Private Georgo Hampton, reported wounded in the right ear on July 8, is the eldest, son of the late Mr Geo. .las. ami the late Mrs Mary Hampton. He was born at Dundry, England, and educated at Dipton. Prior to enlisting with the 4tb Southland Company on August 23 of last year, he followed the occupation of a farmer. He was a member of the Dipton Football Club, and of the Dipton Athletic Club. Lance-corporal Edwin Traill reported wounded in the chest on July 13 is a son of Mr and Mrs A. W. Traill, late of Oringa Oringa, Stewart Island. He was horn at the Island and educated at the South and High Schools. He enlisted at Gisborne In the Earl of Liverpool’s Regiment, but was subsequently transferred to the Otago Battalion. While in Invercargill LanceCorporal Traill was an active member of th© Invercargill Bowing Club, and was successful in winning a cup at an Invercargill Regatta, Mr Traill has four sons at the front, and only last mail received word that the four boys had met in France. A Nelson Press Association telegram states that word has been received that Lieutenant Athol Hudson, son of the late Dr Hudson and Mrs Hudson, of Tapawera, has been killed in action. Lieut, Hudson was an old boy of Nelson College and Waitaki High School, and was selected in 1915 as the Rhodes scholar from Victoria College. CAFTAIS JOLIT’S SEATS COEnSKES. The Cromwell correspondent of the Dunedin Star wired on Saturday that the death of Captain Jolly was officially confirmed late an Friday afternoon. It may be said that no calamity in the present great struggle has more deeply affected the community than has his death. His answer to the call to arms was surrounded with extreme sacrifice, and was not confined to his extensive business connections, but also in parting with his wife and six young children, to whom the very deepest sympathy goes out. A lifetime attachment to volunteering and a steady promotion in the ranks of the Territorials no doubt inspired bis action in going forth to do battle. His life was one of enterprise, energy, grit, and consideration for those associated with him —noble characteristics which were displayed in his dying moments. Immediately on receipt of the official news flags were flown half-mast, and the citizens assembled at the Mayors request and passed a motion of sympathy with his wife and family, and arranged for a public memorial service. Dance-Corporal Hugh Lindsay Maxr, wounded in the head in action in France, is the third son of the late Mr Hugh Malr and Mrs Mair, now of Wellington. He was educated at the Middle and High .Schools, Invercargill, and at the time of his enlistment in the Eighth Reinforcements was a clerk in the office of Messrs ,T. E. Watson and Co., Ltd. He was prominently identified with the Harriers In Invercargill. Lance-Corpl. Hair’s late father, Mr Hugh Malr, was one of Invercargill’s ex-mayors, UERTKBAJrT L. MTT.T.A nil Many Soutblanders will read with regret of the death in action of Lieut. L. Millard, one of the well known Fortrose family. His father. Captain Millard, was in Invercargill a fortnight ago as Officer Commanding the mounted detachment of the Fourteenth Reinforcements. Lieut. Millard was an ex-pupil of the Southland Boys' High School apd was a prominent athlete. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, returned to the dominion some nine or ton months ago, and before leaving again married. He therefore leaves a young widow in Wellington. PRIVATE O. W. CLUtX. Private Charles Wm. Clark, who was on July 18 reported wounded in the back, is a son of Mr Francis and Mrs Helen Clark, of Roslyn Bush. He was born at Myross Bush, and educated at the Myross Bush and Boslyn Bush schools. He left for the. front.with the Bth Reinforcements, and prior to enlisting was employed in contracting and chaff-cutting in the Mabel district. He was a member of the Myross Sports Club for several years.,
