TOWN COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Town Council met last evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr D. McFarlane), and Councillors J. T. Carswell, 11. Dunlop, T. D. Lennie, W. A. Ott, John Stead, T. O’Byrne, I. L. Petrie, J. E. Lillicrap, \Vm. Baird, A. Bain, and W. Martin. —Correspondence.— Longuet and Robertson, solicitors, forwarded transfer of lease of section 9, block 21, for the Corporation’s consent. The document was in order for execution. —Permission to transfer granted. The Hon. Wm. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, intimated that he would arrive in Invercargill on February 24. Received. Thomas McLeod, Trafalgar, applied to the Council to have his name placed on the permanent staff of the' public works. He had been constantly employed by the Corporation as a casual employee for the last nine years.—Referred to the Works Committee for report. A- A. Cushen, Earn - street, asked the Council to asphalt the footpath in front of his property, Enwood. —Referred to the Works Committee for report. Bessie L. Cowie, Amethyst Hall, wrote stating that at a large meeting of two branches of the W.C.T.U., deep and warm appreciation had been expressed at the removal of liquor advertisements from tramcars. The members felt that it was a pleasant duty to help to fill some of the vacant places, and all agreed to inlluence their business friends to advertise in the trams. In addition, they felt that they would like to take the spaces over the doors for their own advertisement at the curren rates. She enclosed copy of the advertisement, two spaces in each of ten cars, at £l2 per annum.—Referred to the Tramways Committee with power to act. The secretary of the Southland Patriotic Committee advised that February 22 at S p.m. had been fixed as the date and hour to hold a conference with the Mayor and councillors regarding aid to wounded soldiers.—Date approved of. The president of the Southland Bowling Club advised that his club was carrying out various improvements in connection with the beautifying of the surroundings of their green. They were erecting a new gate in Forth street, and intended to plant in parts of the ground shrubs and flowers. The club would esteem it a favour if the Council could see its way to help the club by giving a few plants, some soil, and gravel, which would be used in improving the approach to the green.—Referred to the Reserves Committee with power to act. The Avenal Swimming Club applied for a water service to their two dressing sheds for shower baths, and stated that they were quite prepared to pay for the water used, provided the Council laid the main to the sheds. —Referred to the Harbour Committee for report. The Avenal Swimming Club also applied for the dressing shed on the foreshore at Avenal, formerly used by the Y.W.C.A. Club, which had been used very little last season and not at all this season.—Referred to the Harbour Committee for report. —Petitions. — Colin McDonald and four other residents drew attention to the state of the footpath on the south side of Beatrice street, 'Wellesley, it being completely overgrown with cuttic grass and weeds, and it was impossible for anyone to use the path in wet weather without getting wet to the knees. —Referred to the Works Committee for report. —Reports.— The reports of the various committees (already published) were adopted, with slight amendments referred’ to elsewhere. The reports of heads of departments were received, and referred to the several committees.
