SOUTHLAND ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
The monthly meeting of the Council was held last night and was attended by Messrs W. A. Stout (president, R. Sloan, J. Steans, A. W. Clark, J. Robertson. G. F. Strang, Jas. Collins, C W. Wilson, A. H. Stock, K. K. Stephens, G. T. Moffett, E. Russell and K. E. Crofts. Apologies were received from Messrs A, E. Tapper, R. McKenzie, A. B. Haggitt and Ed. Keast. It was decided (hat in future single river licenses be not issued for boundary rivers; this is conforming to a resolution passed at the last conference of delegates held in Wellington. In regard to the next shooting season, which is a close season according to law. it was resolved to recommend the Minister to open the season for hares and that if an open season be declared for Otago, that the same privilege as are granted for that district be extended to Southland.
The opinion was expressed however that it would be in the interests of the district that native game should be protected this year as provided by the Act. Several reports from the ranger were dealt with and committees appointed to look Into the questions raised and to report. The Stock Committee reported as follows :
The committee have to report that the fry have all been liberated, and the balance of the ducks will go out immediatelv. 'Pile curator will then make a start with the improvements already decided upon, viz., the concreting of the face of the big pond and the raising of the intake.
Mr Arthur Gerrard, Te Auau Downs Station, lias kindly consented to allow the Canadian geese to be liberated at bis homestead. Lake Te Anau. The committee recommends that the balance of the mallards, 74, be liberated at Victoria Park, and that a bag of oats be sent to feed them. The report was adopted.
