RAIN IN NORTH OTAGO. O’AMARU, February 16. The rain during tlie last, lew days lias freshened up tlie country considerably. and lias brightened the prospects for winter feed. CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. The oat market is very slow, and with very few lines passing, .prices are, if anything, a shade easier. Tlie majority of growers are refraining from offering, some being uncertain whether they will not require all their oats for stock feed during the coming winter. The recent rains, however, have done mm !i to allay fears regarding a scarcity of winter feed, and it is highly probable that the coming week will witness increased offerings of (his cereal. It is generally recognised that whatever business will lie done in oats during tlie current year will be of a local character, since with

short supplies It will be impossible for the province to compete successfully against other parts of the dominion, notably Southland, where the crop is reported to be an abundant one. Locally, values are unchanged, but it seems doubtful whether these would be maintained were any considerable quantity of grain placed on the market. The chaff market is dull, little having passed for some time. The current offers range from £4 10/- to £1 15/-, but at tliesc prices there are few sellers. In tlie past it has been the practice to ship large quantities of chaff to other parts of the dominion, but it seems doubtful if shipments this season will reach largo dimensions, as with chaff comparatively short in the province and with large quantities offering in other parts of the country, notably in Marlborough, Wairarapa, Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay, it is unlikely that Canterbury will obtain more than a small share of the trade. Besides, it is considered that the greater part' of the quantity available in Canterbury will be required for consumption within the province. STANDARD INSURANCE COMPANY. The annual report of of the Standard Insurance Company states that the net income for the year, after providing for unexpired risks, amount to £132,4.95 H!/10, and the expenditure to £100,021 13/6, leaving a balance of £31,874 3/1, to which lias to lie added tlie balance carried forward from last year ' —viz., £8351 1/3 —making a total of £40,225 1/7. From tins amount an interim dividend was paid in .lime last amounting to £3750, leaving a balance of £35,175 4/7, which the. directors have dealt with in the following manner:— To reserve fund, £1(5,000; to guarantee and provident fund, £2500: to appropriation for depreciation of securities, £2500.
