The unexpired sentences of 255 burghers who refused to serve against the German have been remitted. The rebels, Bezuidenhout and Kock, who were Lieutenant-Colonels in the Defence Force, have been sentenced to five and four years’ imprisonment respectively. Brigadier-General Lukin commands the First Brigade of South African troops for Europe. Instead of military pay the Government allows civil servants and railway employees leave of ■absence on full pay if they are appointed to commands or staff duties; others receive half pay. Brigadier-General Henry Timson Lukin, L.SJ >., is lifty-live years of age and his residence is at Pretoria. lie served in the .South African War in IS TO, and subsequently saw service in the Zulu campaign, in Basutoland, in EechuanaJand and in the last Sou Hi African war. Ho lias commanded forces in South Africa for many years, and at present is Inspector-General of the Permanent Forces of the Union of South Africa. KEUP’S SENTENCE. CAPETOWN, July 2.2. The rebel Kemp lias been sentenced at Pretoria to seven years’ imprisonment and fined ill 000. PRETORIA, July 21. The latter held the King’s commission shortly before the rebellion, and actually co-operated with Maritz, whereas lie Wet stated that lie would have renounced Maritz if lie found Maritz co-operating with the Germans.
