STAR AND GARTER FIRE
M AGI ST I: AT ES FINDING. “NOT SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE.'' (Per United Press Association.) OAMABU. March 21. Mr J. K. Bartholomew. S.M.. delivered K lengthy judgment this morning in respect to the ciiuuiry as to tho tiro at Uiu Star amt Garter Hotel.’ His Worship concluded thus:—After giving the fullest consideration to tho whole evidence. 1 musl say that Mr Clark's story still persists as a weighty Indictment. But in endeavouring to come to a definite rinding 1 must proceed on principles of proof applicable to a criminal trial, and a person cannot bo condemned for a serious crime on a balancing of probabilities, but guilt must be proved beyond reasonable doubt. I am unable to make any express finding. My lor mat verdict is this: "The Star and G.trier Hotel was partly destroyed by tire on tlie I Ith February, 1915, which originated in tlie vicinity of rooms 36.'and :’,7. in what is known ns the old building, but there is not sufficient evidence to show bow tlie said tiro was iiaused."
